These breeds are known for their dependable production, friendly personalities, and stunning plumage. Barred Rock: Hardy and relaxed, these black-and-white barred hens are perfect for any flock. They’re friendly, even with children, and adapt well to cold weather.
Egg production: 200-250 eggs per year.
Buff Orpingtons: These deep buff-colored birds are calm, hardy, and occasionally broody, making them excellent mothers.

Ginger Browns: Our most prolific brown egg layer, these reddish-ginger hens with white tails excel in winter and thrive with proper management. They are calm, friendly birds and excellent foragers. Marans (Black, Brown, and Cuckoo): These lines were specially developed at Whiting Farms Hatchery to be a higher producer of darker brown and often speckled eggs, with lightly feathered feet adding a unique touch.

Jersey Black Giant: Known for their striking coal-black plumage and massive size, these dual-purpose birds are gentle giants in the flock. They will take around 2 years to reach their full size.

Rhode Island Red: The Whiting Farms Hatchery RIR line is comparable to the Red Sex Link hens in egg production and friendly temperment. A classic breed for backyard flocks, these deep red hens are hardy, adaptable, and excellent producers.

Silver Columbian Rock: These striking birds with white bodies and black neck and tail accents are talkative and excellent mothers. They tend to be great winter layers.

Welsummer: With their chipmunk-striped chicks and rich reddish-brown adult plumage, these birds are as beautiful as their often speckled eggs.
